Ensayenna Chey

Ensayenna Chey, born in Cambodia in 1955, is the daughter of Sayenn Kim &
En Chey, the mayor of Skun and Prey Totung. As such, Ensayenna grew up
educated and living in great comfort. She was 20 when the Khmer Rouge, led by genocidal despot Pol Pot, took over Cambodia, and her entire life changed
instantly and drastically. She went from a life in high society to one spent half-starved and performing arduous manual labor each and every day: she routinely witnessed murder, torture, and starvation. By concealing her identity for years, she managed to survive and eventually, to escape, even as her family, friends, and nearly everyone she knew were captured, tortured, or murdered. She spent the horrific years subsisting as a laborer under a merciless dissident regime.

Ensayenna Chey has survived incredible odds to tell her story, and she conveys it with tremendous grace, courage, and faith. Her book, “White Elephant”, is a testament to the indomitable power of hope, and its message continues to resonate long after the final page is turned.
